During 2009, Dutch egg production reached 9.65 billion eggs, an increase of 1.5%. The number of laying hens increased by almost 1 million, creating 31.9 million layers; 56% of which is made up of barn, free-range and organic hens.
Dutch exports of both eggs and egg products also rose during 2009. The number of deep litter eggs exported to Germany increased significantly, and there was also an increase in the amount of liquid and frozen egg products exported to both Germany and the U.K. The number of eggs being imported into The Netherlands during this time dropped, while the percentage of egg products imported increased.
