Movement of flocks of laying hens in and out of the hen house in four free range systems

There is considerable concern over the continued use of battery cages because of the severe restriction of movement which these systems impose. This has led to the development of alternatives, some of which involve allowing flocks of hens (Gallus gallus domesticus) free movement between the inside of a building and outside pasture areas. In these free range systems it is important to establish how frequently hens utilise the outdoor areas in order to establish whether houses become overcrowded. This information should allow a better understanding of the conditions likely to improve overall usage and the welfare of hens.
