Egg Sustainability

We believe sustainability should be fully integrated through every element of the egg industry and aspire to a global egg value chain that is environmentally sound, socially responsible, and economically viable.

Egg production is already one of the most environmentally-friendly forms of agricultural production as hens convert feed into protein very efficiently and require a relatively small land base to do so. However, we are always striving for continuous improvement, and as an industry, we have committed to supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).

We are proud of the improvements that the egg industry has already made to deliver positive outcomes in line with these targets.

Global Initiative for Sustainable Eggs

The Global Initiative for Sustainable Egg Production (GISE) was established as a multi-stakeholder initiative to champion continuous development and improvement in sustainability across the global egg value chain through collaboration, knowledge sharing, sound science and leadership.

To ensure the GISE has direct relevance at a production level, the IEC is currently in the process of developing and implementing Guidelines for Excellence. Designed to help all egg businesses to align themselves with a broad spectrum of sustainable indicators, the standards are being developed around five pillars of focus:

    1. Environment and Natural Resources
    2. Feed the World with Safe Affordable High-Quality Protein
    3. People and the Community
    4. Animal Health and Welfare
    5. Efficiency and Innovation

By championing continuous development in sustainability, this latest initiative will carve the way for sustainable egg production and enable egg businesses to adopt a vision for raising the global benchmark by meeting the associated guidelines.

Sustainable Egg Production Expert Group

To support the Global Initiative for Sustainable Eggs, the IEC has brought together experts with an interest in sustainable agricultural food production to champion continuous development and improvement of sustainability practices throughout the egg value chain. The Expert Group will support the egg industry to continue to lead the way in sustainable protein production globally.
